The Teacher's Pet...Mommy's Piggy Tales #6

Age 9 or 4th Grade

This was the year I wrote about the life of a seahorse for testing at school & then my writing got published in an educator's journal as an example of a Distinguished piece of writing. My mom thought it was a big deal & I was just excited about the $25.00 I got paid!

I also did my fair share of trying to help around school (aka brown-nosing) & I cleaned off the chalk from this brick wall outside the school door with a couple of friends. It was an area that was under a roof, so it never got rained on to get washed off, but all these kids would bang erasers (back when we had chalkboards) on the wall. We cleaned it off & the principal mentioned us over the loudspeaker at the end of the day. I felt like a big deal. Can you tell I was a bit of a teacher's pet?
I also remember we had D.A.R.E. at school that year. No offense to the D.A.R.E. people, but I find it completely ineffective. For one thing - how great can it be when your assigned police officer/D.A.R.E. instructor later gets arrested for drug charges? Not so awesome. I can still clearly see his big black shoes & I can hear him telling us about how a guy he knew one time had to get skin from his butt put in the inside of his lip because he used tobacco dip too much. Gross.

All my memories are centering around school right now, but those are my most distinct memories of the elementary school ages. As we get into middle school later, I have more memories in my personal life.

This post made me smile because you remind me of myself. And I agree - DARE is not effective. Sad but true. Following!

Wow, I haven't thought about DARE in a long time. I remember it was the big thing the 5th graders got to do in our school, and I couldn't wait to be able to got o that assembly, and then we moved half way through 4th grade and did n't come back until my 6th grade year! I missed it!! The other schools I went too didn't have DARE assemblies, at least not for the grade I was in. :( I always wanted on of those tees!

As usual thanks for sharing Cameron! I love reading the posts and have otherwise forgotten memories of mine triggered!!

DARE may not be effective... but I think I like that they offer it any way...some kids are so turned off by what they hear that it sticks to them.. but some of drug abuse is genetic or ... so nothing can be as effective as our genes... LOL
Cameron... nice post.

Clapping erasers! Wow - that brought back a memory for me of doing that in 5th grade. It was a privilege to get picked - well for us "teacher's pets" that is. ;-)

10 on Tuesday: 10 Favorite 6 Month Pics

This is completely gratuitous, just me posting pictures of Isis, but my friend Hannah took some pictures of our family yesterday! She is such a great photographer & she is also going to be watching Isis for me in the fall when I start my student teaching. I feel so blessed to have her as a friend on top of the fact that she takes gorgeous pictures of Isis!! I also realized that I didn't put any of the ones where she is smiling in this post. This just means I'll have to post more another time! Get excited! (And this is not a great comment-grabbing post , but who cares? This is for the digital baby book!)
