Rat-tails are Gross...Mommy's Piggy Tales #7

Age 10 or 5th Grade

Big news in 5th grade: I liked a boy!! I’m sure there were a few here & there that I was maybe interested in before now, but this is the first year that I remember having a major crush!! This is the year I remember my hormones going CRAZY! The object of my affection was named Alex & just to show you how redneck the city I grew up in was, I must point out that he had a rat-tail. Remember those? That one long little clump of hair that grew out & down their back while the rest of their head was shaved or had a fabulous 80’s flat-top? I mean, really, who ever started the rat-tail craze because it’s embarrassing to look back on. Gross. We also played four-square at recess like it was nobody’s business & I wore biker shorts under cut-off jean shorts & thought I was really awesome. Ah the 80’s/90’s style crazes.

Also in 5th grade, I had my tonsils removed. I remember eating soup & popsicles for days. I remember throwing up blood & I remember swallowing scabs. (Sorry for the visuals, people, but those are the things I remember.) I also remember my doctor asking me right before I went under if I was the kid who wanted to see my tonsils after they were removed...um NO.

My best friends were named Brianna, Janie & Laura. I remember watching the movie Cry-Baby with them at slumber parties (oh Johnny Depp...I was a big fan even then) & listening to Janet Jackson all the time. I remember my friend Brianna’s older sister was also obsessed with Tori Amos & Silverchair. She had posters of both in her room & I thought Tori Amos was weird.

I was a member of the Academic Team at school & we won the state competition! It was really fun!! At the regional meet, I even got the winning answer right by spelling pneumonia. I felt pretty cool. That was the peak of my nerdiness in terms of school, though, because in 6th grade I was sent to private school & everything changed...

cry baby was the best. so wierd, but totally awesome. i did the bike shorts underneath plasticy athletic shorts. what was i thinking?
Cry Baby was my favorite movie back then ;) And I agree, the rat tail was a horrible trend and every boy I knew back then had one!

I think ours were called duck tails though... Hmmmm. I might have to call my brother on this one! He had one - I'm sure he'll remember. :)

HA! I remember that hair style. Some boys in my classes just a couple years before had them and I thought it looked weird, though the boys were overall rated as 'cute'. And I remember 4square too, in 6th grade that was 'the' game to be playing at recess, that and tetherball, because as 6th graders we ruled the playground!
Thanks for sharing!!

Wow I love it that so many loved Cry Baby & remember the rat-tails & biker shorts!! The early 90's were just embarrassingly fabulous!

Immediately after reading this post, I clicked over to Netflix to put Cry-Baby in my queue. It's on instant streaming. I'm so watching it tonight! I loved that movie and the movie Girls Just Wanna Have Fun with Sarah Jessica Parker. I bet I could still recite it word for word after all these years.

I had a crush on a boy with a rat-tail. Those were the days. Maybe rat-tails will be the next big thing again. It could happen. If shoulder pads can come back in style, then ANYTHING can happen.

Why do doctors ask you if you want to see them? Ugghh! They asked me that too. I had mine out in second grade!

Okay Cameron, I worked until late tonight...and tomorrow...and early this weekend but I PROMISE I will get back to our email. My apologies. I just wanted to check out your latest post before bed. I can't wait to hear the rest of this story! ;-)

Rat tails...yeah...not quite sure what was up with those? Oh and the biker shorts under the jean shorts!
Just had to brag that when I was in university in Vancouver, I came down the stairs of my dorm and found Johnny Depp lounging on the couch in the boys dorm. They used to film 21 Jump Street in Vancouver and on my campus every so often. Got the visual though: young Johnny Dep L-O-U-N-G-I-N-G....are you jealous? ok, I didn't think so, I just like to brag! Hey girl, I love your posts and I love this going down memory lane material!

10 on Tuesday: 10 Favorite 6 Month Pics

This is completely gratuitous, just me posting pictures of Isis, but my friend Hannah took some pictures of our family yesterday! She is such a great photographer & she is also going to be watching Isis for me in the fall when I start my student teaching. I feel so blessed to have her as a friend on top of the fact that she takes gorgeous pictures of Isis!! I also realized that I didn't put any of the ones where she is smiling in this post. This just means I'll have to post more another time! Get excited! (And this is not a great comment-grabbing post , but who cares? This is for the digital baby book!)
