Jelly Beans, Butter & Stone Soup!...Mommy's Piggy Tales #4

Age 7 or Second Grade

My mom is currently on a cruise celebrating her retirement, so I wasn't able to get her help piecing together when my memories actually happened! I found this picture above that she had sent me & based on the date it said in the email, this was around 2nd grade for me. We went to Disney World! I remember Mickey & Minnie's house the most clearly, but that's about it. But I believe this picture was taken in Captiva Island, FL where we used to always go for vacations because my grandfather owned part of a time-share condo there!  I have many great memories in Captiva that I'll probably share later! I also remember wearing this polka-dotted Disney shirt countless times & you can't see, but it had a rockin' pair of biker shorts that went with it!

I have great memories from 2nd grade in school because I had a wonderful teacher! Her name was Mrs. Sampson & she was my teacher in 2nd & 3rd grade. I remember reading a lot in her classes, but the biggest thing I remember was getting to make food! She would bring in a crock pot or a hot plate & we would make different foods related to books we read. One time, I don't remember what we were studying (maybe pilgrims?), but we made our own butter! We all got a turn churning the butter & then we all got to eat a little of the butter on a cracker. I remember being just amazed that we could make butter! As a kid, you know, you think those things just come as they are.

We also made soup one time when we read the book Stone Soup & we made spaghetti when we read Strega Nona. I loved Strega Nona!! If you've never read it, check it out! Tomie dePaola is one of my favorite children's books author & illustrator. Looking back on it, I think this idea of making food in class in relation to books was an absolutely fabulous one! Here we are 20 years later, and I can still remember the titles of the books we read & what they were about. That's a pretty strong connection to literature that I made using food! I look forward to using these memories to build connections for students in my future classrooms!

Another great memory from this age & this particular school year was jelly bean days! My teacher had a system where if you had a great day that day in terms of behavior & temperament, you got a jelly bean! Not to toot my own horn or anything, but I got jelly beans a lot! I remember we wrote a poem as a class about jelly bean days. I don't remember exactly how it went, but we listed the good things that could happen or that you could do & every phrase ended with: "looks like it's going to be a jelly bean day!" Jelly beans might not fly in schools today because we are discouraged from providing sweets - in some schools we are prohibited from providing sweets - so we'd have to go with a healthier or food-free reward. But man, I still remember those yummy jelly beans!!

Great memories. I love the idea of tying food to a book! We did something similar this year in our homeschooling co-op. We studied different countries and the snack was a food from that country. It was fun and yummy! ;-)

Good memories! We often had "jelly bean field day" where we won jelly beans for each outside activity. We would come home with a whole bag of jelly beans. Good stuff!

seems like you have a fabulous days with your teacher and it's a good idea to share the idea with your future class. That would be amazing. I can assure you that children/students would really remember you on what you showed, portrayed and did for them.

I know you'll be a great teacher! I'll look forward in reading your good memories about the class.

I think that sounds so great that your teacher had you make certain foods to tie in with books! I wish more of mine had done something like that. Some of the better memories I have from that age involve food in the classroom, like the time someone did a report on Greece and made baklava (sp??). I thought it was so good!!
Thanks for sharing!

I'm still chuckling at the "rockin' pair of biker shorts!" I loved my biker shorts! You are such a delight, and why am I not surprised that you received a lot of jelly beans? It's so "you!" I mean that in the best possible way!

i taught k for many years and I made butter and cooked so much... in school not sure if kids that young remember but ... I love to do it.. and try to do it with my son.. I had a principal that would not let me do it she told me food and celebration is wrong.. it turns people obese...I was appauled... and dont' agree.
What a great teacher, I find my kids always do better in school when they have a creative teacher. Here in Australian schools the teachers do still have a good old lollie jar in the class for treats & the kids really do feel rewarded when they get one!!!

I love that people are enjoying the idea to tie food into reading books! I want to use that in my future classroom, so it seems to be mom-approved! I really have lots of ideas for getting kids really involved. I believe in hands-on learning!

And Crystal I had to say - I remember the first time I had baklava & it was after watching Aladdin because the genie sings something about "how 'bout a little more baklava?" And then, of course, I had to have some.

I also think the idea of tying a food in a with a book is a great idea. We did it once, in the fifth grade. I can't remember for sure the book we read, but we apple butter and had it on bagels. I had never had a bagel before (being from the South, we do biscuits), and I thought it was so neat to eat bagels, lol.

10 on Tuesday: 10 Favorite 6 Month Pics

This is completely gratuitous, just me posting pictures of Isis, but my friend Hannah took some pictures of our family yesterday! She is such a great photographer & she is also going to be watching Isis for me in the fall when I start my student teaching. I feel so blessed to have her as a friend on top of the fact that she takes gorgeous pictures of Isis!! I also realized that I didn't put any of the ones where she is smiling in this post. This just means I'll have to post more another time! Get excited! (And this is not a great comment-grabbing post , but who cares? This is for the digital baby book!)
